Practice recent information-gathering situations with questions that help you sustain a real exchange.
You’re sitting in the exam room. The examiner gives you a prompt. You have two minutes to prepare.
Then the dialogue begins.
You know the topic. You’ve prepared vocabulary about restaurants, apartments and leisure activities. But the examiner isn’t just waiting for questions—they’re waiting for an interaction.
Task 2 isn’t about reciting a checklist of questions. It’s about listening, following up, and using the information you receive to reach a decision. A candidate who asks ten disconnected questions covers the advertisement but sounds mechanical. A stronger candidate listens, reacts, and builds a natural exchange.
Officially, Task 2 is an interaction exercise lasting 5 minutes 30 seconds, including 2 minutes of preparation and approximately 3 minutes 30 seconds of dialogue. The examiner plays the role stated in the prompt.
The 20 situations below were selected from topics associated with recent TCF Canada sessions and preparation-community archives during 2025–2026. For each one, you will find:
the paraphrased task
a French translation of the prompt
the information you need to obtain
a bank of possible French questions
one follow-up route that turns a list into an interaction
About the Prompts
These prompts have been paraphrased or reconstructed from candidate reports and third-party archives. They are not official examination papers, and their presence here does not mean they will appear in a future session. They are provided as illustrative training material to help you understand the types of situations you may encounter.
How to Use the Question Banks
Do not memorise every question word for word. During the two-minute preparation period:
identify your relationship with the examiner
note five or six information categories
prepare a natural opening
leave space for follow-up questions
remember the decision you are trying to make
The questions below are possibilities, not fixed scripts.

The Recurring Information Categories
The twenty topics change, but the missing information usually belongs to a small number of categories:
| Category | Examples |
|---|---|
| Time | Date, schedule, duration, frequency |
| Cost | Price, deposit, extra charges, discount |
| Conditions | Age, level, documents, restrictions |
| Practical arrangements | Transport, equipment, location, booking |
| People | Participants, staff, roommates, guests |
| Alternatives | Cheaper option, beginner group, different date |
| Problems | Cancellation, weather, illness, damage |
| Decision | Recommendation, comparison, suitability |
Use these categories during preparation, but adapt them to the situation. Asking about a refund may suit an amusement park or cooking course. It is unlikely to help when a colleague is describing a wedding.
A Final Task 2 Check
Before the dialogue begins, confirm that you know:
who the examiner is playing
whether you should use tu or vous
why you need the information
which five categories matter most
what answer could generate a follow-up
what decision or next step should close the exchange
Task 2 is not a competition to produce the largest number of questions. It is an interaction. The examiner’s answer should influence what you say next.
Next Steps
Choose three prompts from this list and practise them with a partner or recording.
During your two-minute preparation, note five key question categories—not full sentences.
After asking each question, listen for the examiner’s answer and prepare a follow-up.
End each interaction with a decision or next step.
Review your recordings for follow-up questions, not just initial questions.
