You can as also consider easy to understand french series such as the “The Returned”, which is available to watch online. This french series is completed with english subtitles.

Le Petit Nicolas (Little Nicholas) is a family movies based on a series of French children’s books. I found this movie truly hilarious and really enjoyed how easily this young man seem to get into trouble and the creative ways that he found to get himself out of these situation. Narrated from Nicolas point of view, this movie is great for both children and adults.

“Hors de prix” Movies to help you learn French : part 1

Watching your favourite movie in French, is not as hard as it use to be. Many DVDs and Bluerays comes in a multi language format, where you can select which language you prefer or maybe just select the caption you prefer. However, I have to agree that hearing a voice over is definitely not the same as hearing it in the original version. It always seem as if something is “lost in translation”.

If you are looking for authentic french films to watch, in order to vary your exposure to the french language while you are studying for your exam, this “movies to help you learn french” post will guide you on your way.

You can as also consider easy to understand french series such as the “The Returned”, which is available to watch online. This french series is completed with subtitles.

If you have a at least solid B1 or intermediate level in French and like movies,  I would recommend the following 2006 French film to you.  It is a romance-comedy which features two of France most popular actors Audrey Tautou and Gad Elmaleh.

Priceless (original title “Hors de prix”)

hors-de-prix-affiche

It tells the story of a young gold digger who mistakenly seduce a bartender thinking he’s a wealthy target.  This movie follows their little “adventure” to finding out what true love really means.

I found this movie very interesting and funny and as a result I believe both men and women alike will enjoy this movie. I watched this movie just after I completed my DELF A2 exam and while I could not understand every word, I was able to understand enough to be able to follow the movie and be truly entertained.

Where to find this french movie?

Try some of the online stores such as amazon. Up to a year ago this french movie was available on youtube. Try your luck you never know.

This movie is directed at a mature audience.

Language exchange sites to improve your french

16215416_sUsing language exchange sites is a great way to improve your French . Many people are using a language exchange site to improve their spoken and comprehension of the french language as spoke by a native french speaker.

This is pretty good, as you are able to hear spoken french, not just how it is taught academically but how it is spoken by a native speaker. This is extremely useful  especially for people who are planning to move to a french speaking country, may it be for a job, school or permanent migration.

Can’t I learn english with my french teacher? Not like this. If you think about it, it is the same for english. Depending where you are from, the english we speak in the classroom, is way different than the english we speak day to day. The colloquialism which has become a natural part of our pattern of speaking is usually omitted in our english class. The same goes for french. If you would like to speak like a native, put aside the french book and get a language exchange partner.

With a language exchange both sides can benefit. Communication can be by Skype, messenger or just email messages if you are trying to improve your french writing. Some language exchange sites have meet up groups that you can do face to face exchange.

At what level should you be considering a language exchange website? …level B1. Why? People on language exchange sites are like you. They do not have time or maybe the patience to teach a beginner all that you will need to know.  As a result,  you would need to have enough communication skills to be able to introduce yourself and moreover to get the conversation started. In addition for levels A1 and A2 the french you will need to learn is not an advance level.

Here are four language exchange sites that can be useful in helping to improve your french.

Polyglot Club

8 tips for choosing the right dictionary and french verbs app

dictioaryBelieve it or not, not all dictionaries or grammar books/ apps are developed in the same way. Some dictionaries are way better than others. While there is no science to choose a dictionary, whether it is an app or in a bookstore, here are a few tips to help you out.

(1) The bigger bigger the dictionary…. the better:

There is a reason why it is bigger: It has more words! With a bigger dictionary, you can be sure that you will get more examples and suggestions for use for each word. As a result you can see how the word is used in different context. This is important  especially for french learners at the level B1 and higher.

(2) Choose a dictionary from a well-known publisher:

Larousse, Oxfords, Webster etc  have been  developing and publishing dictionaries for many decades. They know what they are doing. While many times these apps are not free, when preparing for your french exam it is best to be safe and go with one of these old reputable publishers than to go with a free app from an unknown publisher.

(3) If you want the best french dictionary…consider Larousse:

Larousse french dictionaries are to the french as the Oxford english dictionaries are to the english. Larousse  is a well known french publishing company which publish french english dictionary. 9 out of 10 french students in France prefer Larousse dictionaries.

(4) Always select a Dictionary and grammar apps that work offline:

Nothing sucks more than when you need to get the definition of a word or the conjugation of a verb and the internet connect does not work!

(5) Make sure your app is transferable to other devices:

If an app does not allow you to share between devices, it might be a good idea to think it over before buying it. This is true especially for a paid app. No one wants to pay for an app more than once. Check to make sure you can download and install you app on more than one device. This way, if at some time you decide to change you device you can be sure that you will not have to buy again the same app.

(6) Choose a conjugation apps that have french and english:

If you are a beginner, Level A1, a conjugation app with your native language or english is the way to go. Many conjugation apps with two languages, give you the option to search in either language. This makes it easier to find verbs AND there conjugation.

(7) Conjugation of Reflexive Verbs:

Your app should be able to define and give the meaning and conjugation of both a reflexive and non reflexive verb. For many students are level A1 and A2, the use of reflexive verbs as well as the identification of reflexive verbs is of great importance.

(8) Get an all-in-one App:

If you can get one app that does everything that you want to do…go for it. It might work out cheaper in the long run and will be way more convenient. A great app to check out from a recognised publisher that is all-in-one is “Le BLED Orthographe, Grammaire, Conjugaison”.  This app overs spelling rules, grammar and also conjugation.  Le BLED is well-known in France and is a must have for many French students. Sadly it is currently only available in french, however if you are a level B1 or above this is a pretty great app to have.

TCF Practice and Mock Exam Resources

TCF

For your preparation for your TCF there are a number of resources available to you in the form of books and websites. Here are a few that I find to be pretty good. you should definitely take a look at them, when you are considering resources for your TCF exam preparation.

Books for TCF exam preparation

tcf activities

This book is very popular among french language schools in France. These follow the same structure of the TCF. Using this book, you can be sure you are on your way to getting the score you deserve on your next TCF exam.

These book can be found on many online bookstore such as Amazon. However, remember to shop around for the best prices.

Billaud Sandrine et Helene Relat. TCF : 250 activites. Paris : CLE International, 2003.

Reussir Le TCF: Exercices et activites d’entrainement , Author: Olivier Bertrand , Isabella Schaffner

This book is great for those wishing to prepare for the TCF by self-study. It offers extensive exercise on the key competences that are needed to be successful in your French exam: listening, language structure and reading comprehension and as well as many written and oral exercises that conform to the format of the TCF.

All exercises have been validated by the CIEP, the official body that delivery this test. Each part consists of exercises evaluating all levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, from beginner (A1) to the next level (C2). It allows everyone to practice according to their level and at their own pace.

Website Resources for TCF exam

9441580_s

You can check this website FRENCH EXAM HUB for Mock exams. It is a collection of all the Mock Exams and exercises resources  are based on the CEFR standard (levels A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 & C2). This means that exam such as the DELF, DALF and TCF follows the same structure. You are expected to learn the same things and the questions and expectation are very similar. As a result, you are able to use the same exercises for these exams to prepare for the TCF. Choose according to your current level in French and start preparing today!

This site is also regularly update with new files and links that can be helpful for the exam preparation. Join our mailing list or join us on Facebook to get regular updates on when other exercises and other test for the TCF exam becomes available.

There are also many useful recommendation for other websites,  apps and podcasts that can be useful in helping you prepare for your exams.

Radio FrRFI++Radio+Franceance International offers exercises, based on the TCF exam format, to understand the news or just to practice your listening and improve your understand of spoken French. These listening exercises are ideal for persons you are at least at the B1 level. In addition to listening « Le journal en français facile », you can read the transcript which is also available.

The site also has exercises based on the listening exercise. There are also a podcast available, which you can download the audio files, so you can listen to them on your mp3 player.

Especially for the TCF, there are a number of mock tests available on the website. It follows the same format as the TCF, where each question gets progressively more difficult. At the end of each test, based on your result, it will give you a score. It will also tell you wish level you have attained on the scale from A1 to C2.

Very similar totv5 Radio France International, this website offers short newscast from TV5 Monde. There are three new videos each week, plus all the other videos are archived on the site. Each video includes a transcript, as well as three comprehension exercises, with each exercise getting progressively difficult to reflect levels A2 to B2.

While it is recommended for level A2 and above, I find the listening a little difficult for this level, and based on my experience in taking the DELF A2 it is not necessary to use this website if you are not aiming for anything more than a A2. I find this site more suitable for levels B1 and above.

There is also an app that can be found in the apple apps store to complement this site. There are two versions: as expect, one free and one paid. The free version allows you one video (the same videos from the website) and the paid versions provides you with the three videos.

Didierfle

This website offers exercises, based on the TCF exam. It covers exercise for  Oral Comprehension, structure of the language and written comprehension based on the structure of the TCF.

 Au Fil Du Fle

More of a blog, however, it is very useful. Follows the same format as TV5 Monde. A video clip in French followed by a comprehension exercise. This site is suitable for level B2 and above.

5 Free apps to improve your French listening & reading comprehension

There are many great apps both on Itunes and android stores that can help you improve your french. However, there are only a few that I would recommend that will be definitely beneficial to helping you improve your score on you french exam.

Why?

Many apps are just flash cards. And while flash cards are good, it will not get you were you need to be for your exam. As a language teacher, I have come to realise that while individual words by themselves will mean one thing, when these same words are paired with one or two other words, the sense or meaning may change. As a result it is essential to get  apps that will expose you to french that is used in context, rather than just random words. In addition, there are some great podcast that can accompany your apps.

The great thing about this app is that no matter what type of learner you are it will be beneficial to you. It offers audio-visual learning material with photos and recordings by native speakers. With this app you can learn by the use of images, phrases, as oppose to individual words, to better understand how french sentences are formed.

It provides easy to understand short french videos clips that cover environment topics from waste management to nuclear energy. all topics you are likely to find on your B2, C1 and C2 french exam paper. The videos are very educational and interesting and provides a good way to extend your vocabulary, in areas not normally covered in traditional french books. I would suggest a level of at least B1.

Tips for choosing the right DELF/DALF Preparation Books

0

7812213_s

There are many books out there to help you prepare for the DELF exam. However choosing the right one is key to passing the exam. One of the best selection of books to learn French is the CLE series. You can find many for sale on amazon or other online bookstore.

Of course, it is essential to find the french textbook that best fits your needs.

There are two sets of books: Instructor –led and Self-taught.

What exactly are instructor-led books?

Instructor led books are books that were designed to be used with a teacher in a classroom setting. There are many great instructor led books out there that are currently been used by many French schools. However, if you are studying on your own there are a few things you will need to know.

Pros
  • If you use a book designed to be instructor-led, you get to use the same material that is being used in the French language schools  such as some centers of Alliance Française. So you are sure you are on the right track
  • Instructor Led-books such as the “Nouveau Taxi : Methode de francais” and “Alter Ego” spend more time on french culture and civilisation. This can be very helpful as your exam will be based on everything french!
  • Many books such as the “Nouveau Taxi : Methode de francais”, a french exam preparation series, have a very clear layout that will make you feel like you are really progressing.
  • Depending on the French textbook that you want, the publishers provides a free instructors guide that can be downloaded directly from the publishers website (classroom CD not!)
Cons
  • In most teacher-led books, some of the listening exercises can only be found in the classroom CD sets that not included in the student textbook. You may also need to buy the Instructors guide to get the recommended response to some of the exercises.  Plus you will need to buy the workbook. That makes Three books + one CD set for one level of the DELF exam. If you are on a budget, this could work out quite expensive.
  • Books are usually all in French, and the layout of some books such as the “Alter Ego” commonly used by Alliance Francaise, is a bit confusing. So if you are a true beginner working alone, it can be difficult to understand the instructions in the beginning.

All in all there are many good Instructor-led French exam preparation books out there.

DELF Exam Self-taught books:

This is self explanatory. If you are planning to learn French on your own, then you might want to consider materials that are oriented towards people such as you.

Pros:
  • Everything you want to prepare is broken down in a clear way.
  • Usually everything is provided in one or two textbooks. All your listening, exercises, grammar is located in one place.
  • This works out way cheaper than buying a teacher-led book, while accomplishing the same things. The price of the teacher-led classroom CD alone would cover the price of your self taught books.
Cons:
  • Books are usually all in French, so if you are a true beginner working alone, it can be difficult.
  • Some self-led books are divided into competences (hence four books), even thought it is not necessary to buy all of them.
How to tell if a textbook is Instructor-led or self study

If you look closely on the back the textbook it will say:  Self study or instructor led. If it is in french look for :

“auto-apprentissage” which is equivalent to self-study.  if it says “un livre de l’eleve” it means student text. If it is a student book check for : materiel pour niveau” which will tell you exactly what you will need to be to complement your textbook.

Hope this post was helpful. I will be adding another soon to recommend which are the best self-taught books and teachers-led books to use for your preparation of the DELF/DALF exam. Until then, if you have a question or something you would like to share just leave a comment.

If you are looking for a group of books designed to help get the necessary practice for your french exam, try the following books:

After preparing for the DELF A1 in 2010, I realize that when it comes to DELF Exam past papers, it was almost none existence. I have checked a number of websites looking for past papers and I was only able to find mock exam resources. Most if not all provided mock exams from the CIEF website. On the other hand there are some really good books that the French Language Schools in France, such as Alliance Francais and others, use. What little resources that I have found, I will now share with you, in addition to the great self-study textbooks you can find for A1.

delf-a1 logoCheck out the CIEF website. The Centre International d’Etudes Pédagogiques is the official site of the DELF and the DALF exams.  This website, while not providing any past papers, does provide free resources for mock exams or in French “examen blanc”.  As someone who has taken the DELF A1 exam, I found this website every useful. The sample mock exams are exactly the same format and structure as the real DELF A1 exam.

Useful books to use for DELF A1:

DELF A1Preparation l’examen du DELF A1 (1CD audio)

A very good book to use and it will definitely help you with your DELF A1 exam preparation is the “Préparation à l’examen du DELF A1”. Paris : Hachette, 2006. With 1 CD  written by Caroline Veltcheff and Hilton Stanley. This book is a collection of mock exams that follows the same structure as the DELF exam.

It covers practice for all sections and also has a suggested response for the Presentation oral section of the exam. I found this to be very help, as when I went in the exam the structure and questions were pretty much the same. As a result it was easier to speak and to understand what was being asked.

DELF A1 150 EXERCISEDelf A1: 150 Activites: Le Nouvel Entrainez-Vous [With CD (Audio) and Booklet] (French Edition)

If you are still looking for extra practice then the next best is Le Nouvel entraînez-vous : DELF A1 150 activités  by Anatole Bloomfield, Emmanuelle Daill, Richard Lescure Emmanuelle Gadet et Pauline Vey.

Knowing your grammar structure and how to spell words in french can make the differences between a 70% and a 90%. key tip: ALWAYS check your spelling and grammar before handing your exam paper. It is better to not have the required word count in the production ecrite section of the exam than to meet or exceed the required word count for the production ecrite section and have bad grammar and a lot of orthographic faults. The following two books will be very helpful to get you on the right path.

Grammaire Progressive Du Francais is a grammar text book aimed at foreign language students of French at the beginner (level A1.1 and A1) level.·The organisation is very simple, which makes it easy to use. It offers on the left page  grammar rules, on the right page of exercises and communication activities.

This book starts from the basics (the article, the indefinite, the pronoun “en”, verbs) and covers essentially everything you will need grammatically for your exam. It is the reference grammar book for people taking the DELF, TCF french exam at the A1 level.

My recommendation: Buy the Niveau debutant if you are a true beginner. However if you have had some experience learning french then I would recommended the level intermediate ( the blue book).
